One black new-to-the-out-of-doors kitty cat has been missing since yesterday morning (Wednesday, June 11th). Responds to Sydney or Syd Vicious. Last spotted in the Hydrostone area near Agricola and Young Street. She is wearing a purple collar with contact info inside. Please drop me a note if you have any information regarding Sydney's whereabouts.

UPDATE: The cat came back this morning! Huzzah!

my neighbour evacuated his apartment under fairly, unfortunate circumstances.
he left his little kitty, binks, behind.

it's definetly understandable that he doesn't plan on ever coming back to the apartment, but poor binks has nobody.
i feed him every day, and i play with him all the time. i wish i could take him in, but edie sedgwick doesn't get along with other cats. and there's really not enough space to house two kitties.

i've called the SPCA, they told me they can't take him because the kennel is under quarantine. they also told me i should contact the police, because it was a case of abandonment,
i called the police, they told me they don;t deal with that kind of thing, and that i should call the SPCA.

i don't know what to do about poor binks!! he's so sad and lonely.

anyone have any advice?

At the time (6am, cold dark morning in January) it wasn't so funny.

i've got peppermint teabags lying around, steel wool stuffed in visible holes, and cat safe traps in my bathroom.
i was wondering about those sonic things that you plug in and the sound bothers mice. does this effect other animals as well?

Meet Sydney & Willy

It all started when my girlfriend and I ending up cat sitting for our friend Sonya. Pachuga (which I believe is Spanish slang for "breast") was an older, skittish cat that came from a broken home. Once she warmed up to us and stopped hiding under the bed, we decided to explore the idea of feline companionship more thoroughly on our own.

Enter Sydney.

Sydney was our first cat and came to us from the SPCA in Burnside. It turned out to be a more rigorous and paper-work heavy process than having a child (for more information on one of those things, type boring baby in Google's video search).

She had a cold, sneezed a lot and looked helpless in her cell. So what if her file said "slightly destructive" on it? How could this poor, defenseless animal do any harm? The first week she was lethargic and snuggled all the time. We interpreted this as "love." She quickly snapped out of it and became the cold, hard cat she is today. Crazed by lasers, able to leap many feet in the air when provoked by the old mouse on a stick trick and quick to claw exposed flesh for fun. When she started to exhibit signs of boredom and irritability in the middle of the night, we figured she needed a friend.

Enter Willy.

We looked after Willy during our friend Lucy's trip to Mexico. When she returned and saw how strong a bond that Willy and Sydney had developed, Lucy let us keep him and we gave her exclusive visitation rights that still exist to this day.

Willy is an old softy. He loves visitors, attention and a warm lap. He doesn't discriminate and is about as low maintenance as a critter can go.

i just had to capitalise on it, because elliot is back! lucky paul went out with a flashlight and coaxed scared little elliot out from under the nextdoor neighbor's deck. i'm so happy, i did a dance with elliot's old friend pocket, who was very sad that he was gone.

so i don't know the whole story, but apparently the downstairs neighbors at 6017 willow are in possession of a kitty cat that looks a whole lot like elliot, but sadly isn't him. he has been living in the basement for a few days, and might be a housecat that's been lost for some time.

here he is!

if anyone has any info on this sad little guy, it would be appreciated. 6017 can't keep him and it would be nice if he went back to his home.

here is some info that we were given about the little guy:

He is extremely (almost overly)
friendly and was obviously once a house cat although
he seems to have been living on the streets for a
while. He has possibly been "fixed" because he has
consistent notches in both ears indicating having had
something done at some point.

I'm posting this for Paul over at Team Willow.

My little buddy Elliot is missing.
He got out sometime early this morning when a door was left open, and we haven't seen him since. We've been scouring the neighbourhood, but so far nothing. I'm starting to get pretty worried.

Here's some important stuff:
- He lives on Willow Street, and probably wouldn't stray too far from there.
- He's orange and white, and super friendly.
- He's pretty scared of other cats.
- He doesn't meow. Almost never. He does chirp occasionally, especially when he's worried or nervous, or wants attention.
- He doesn't have a collar. (but he will from now on.)

Here's the handsome little guy.

Please help me find him. I miss him.

Eyelevel Gallery's annual fundraiser, Pet Spectacle, celebrates our four-legged, feathered, floating and furry friends. Artists are creating one-of-a-kind, pet-inspired paraphernalia, including dwellings, accessories, toys, dishes and clothing (or pet-à-porter!). All masterpieces will be auctioned off at a dance party, November 25, at FRED.

To celebrate, we're launching a limited edition CD compilation of local bands and musicians who love their pets, or other people's animals. It can be a new song, an old song - we're not picky. It doesn't need an animal theme, but it should remind you of animals. In the wild or on the foot of your bed.

Here's what we're asking for:
-one MP3 track
-band bio (50 word limit)
-digital pet photo & bio. If there is more than one pet involved, send photos of them all!

It's been a while since we've posted a local kitten, and I spied this one out of my kitchen window so telephotoed it like she was at a hotel cheating on her husband. This cat is no Monet, though. It's also adorable up close. She hangs out on my porch a lot and does that super cute writhing-around-on-the-ground-to-entice-belly-rubs thing that stranger cats seem to do a lot. Having a cat that basically refuses to do cute and/or playful things makes me a sucker for desperately friendly stranger kitties that I run into on the street.

Dartmouth Cat Show!

This past Saturday, 3 fellow cat fanciers (Melissa, Jessica and Laura) and myself trekked across the pond for an afternoon of positive swoonfestdom. There were many, many beautiful cats but these 3 are my favorites:

This is an Abyssinian, the prettiest I've ever seen! Look at her eyes! they're huge! She was so playful and even climbed up the pole on the judging podium.

This is a Bengal. She was feisty! We saw 2 different judging competitions she was in and she hissed and fussed the whole time! I guess looks aren't everything. She was the only white and black one there; all the others were brown and black.

I have no idea what kind of cat this is, but she might have been my favorite of them all. Whenever I went by her cage she was just sitting very serenely and always had this devestatingly sad expression on her face. Which is bad enough, but then check out the color of her eyes and her little dark grey nose!

It wasn't as good as last year, unless you count the fact that we got to see a cat that we met last year who was all grown up now, and, well, grown up. The tiny little grey kitten named Cadbury had exploded into an enormous grey pompom. I think Melissa has some pure gold pictures. Get on that Melissa!

My friends J. and Emily used to be SPCA foster parents, taking in sick little darlings until they were well enough to stay at the shelter and (hopefully) be adopted by loving families. Sadly, they had to stop doing this, in the interest of protecting their own cats Bruce and Fern.

Luckily, last time they had special sick kitty visitors, I had brought the camera along. If you don't just die from looking at these sweetie pies, then you have no heart.

I especially love how chaotically they pile up to Mom Cat for their milk, or how that one little baby guy is learning how to lick his paw from watching Mom Cat. And how they step in their food plate.

Oodles and oodles of awww-inspiring cuteness, all wrapped in precious little orange packages.

When I got home, the home team immediately sniffed my hand and could tell I'd been around other, possibly more adorable kitties. It was Sulktown at my place for a while, let me tell you.

In Malpeque Harbour, Prince Edward Island, there is a little colony of cats that is taken care of by the local fishermen. They are fed fresh fish and given water, and even have a little cat-version of a Single Wide called The Cat's Meow to keep warm in at night and are given hay in the winter to keep even warmer. It's two parts adorable and one part heartbreaking. There are more than a dozen scrappy cats and kittens sleeping, scampering and sauntering around. As cute as they are and as friendly as many of them are to strange people who wander in squealing with kitten-y delight, they are wild little stinkers who you can't cuddle and maul and steal off to your home under cloak of darkness. Not all of them like pets, which is a drag, but what can you expect from a feral cat? If you do go to PEI, I suggest you go take a gander. The fishermen always accept donations of food or money to help keep the kittens in kibbles.

michael and i got to bring pocket to team willow yesterday! she's got beautiful eyes: they are aquamarine around the edges and then a lighter blue in the middle. i hope they stay that color! she's super cute when she's sleepy, rolling on her back and stretching and yawning. she seems to be adjusting well, but the man of the house is another story: a-hissing and a-sooking all over the place, skulking away when pocket wants to play. who knew elliot was such a, well, pussy?

This kitten was so tiny and skinny! The people who owned our guesthouse didn't particularily like cats, but they had found her all alone and starving. I guess they started feeding her because they were Buddhists. There were a lot of chickens running around all over the place that picked on her. She liked to hang out on the porch of my bungalow because the chickens couldn't reach her there. She was kind of dirty and totally flea-bitten, but I didn't mind because she had such a perfect little face.

There's really not much that needs to be said when you've got three totally new kittens plodding around your feet, and napping on your chest. The best move would probably be to just grab a camera and start writing down all the great things they could be saying in posters, like "Not another Monday!" or "Bad hair day!" or "Just hangin' around.". Y'know?

Robbie found these little rascals under a porch on Northwood Terrace with the help of a local 10 year old. Apparently none of the neighbours know who's they are, so Steph offered to take them in - it was the best decision she ever made in her life! We're proud to report that Francesca has enthusiastically offered to take one of the little guys (the black one) in as a new member of Team Willow! Hopefully Elliot won't mind a company.

I wanted to name the white/grey one Paperclip. Nobody else seems to like that name.

needs custom-made mittens. This is a cat from the Do Duck Inn Petting Farm in PEI. It has extra toes on each adorable little paw. Perhaps this is a NextGen cat that is paving the way for kitties with opposable thumbs. Bizarre feet aside or included, this is one cute kitten.

I have no idea what Corelli does while I'm at work. There are at least eight or ten hours of any given day left to mischief. Apparently she is doing something either violent, stupid or crammed into a tiny, whisker-breakingly confined area. How do I know this? If the use of "whisker-breakingly" as an adverb didn't tip you off, I know this because her whiskers are broken. Moron. Observe:

At first I noticed that her lovely white whisker - the lightning rod of all her kitty stress, perhaps? - was broken. Then I really focused on her cute little cheek and noticed they were all broken. Strange. I called my sister, The Vet, and made sure there wasn't some kind of whisker sickness that cats can be struck down with. There is not. At least not one that breaks whiskers. (They fall out. And the medical term would not be "whisker sickness.") Apparently she got herself into some kind of face-mushing, whisker-bending situation that she could not recover from gracefully. think I need a nanny-cam.

I mentioned earlier that the sister kitties we've been foster-caring for, Leroy and Echo, can't come with us when we leave Halifax (as we can't take them overseas with us). Yet, their previous owner won't be able to take them back either. We've been asking around to everyone we know whether they can take these totally adorable and easy-going cats, but no luck. And now their former owner has told us he will put them in a shelter. We need to find a home for these lovelies asap so they don't wind up in a kitty shelter. Please help us spread the word and e-mail me (triplethreat@swordfight.org or becka_barker@yahoo.com) if you have a place for them. Their former owner will be picking them up SUNDAY morning if we can't find a place before then.

This whole thing really breaks my heart, please help us spread the word!

Lawrence: Lawrence really knows how to stare. It can be a little creepy, but we still love him lots. He was born in the Valley, where, as a very young kitten, he got into a scrap with a raccoon who changed his face a bit. Sometimes we call him "Leaky Eye Larry." He doesn't seem to mind.

Marcus: Also called "Bougie," Marcus is best known for his most generous proportions and hottest of tempers. Personally, I think he is just sensitive, and that when he hisses and tries to scratch as I pet and kiss him mercilessly, he is simply trying to save face in front of the others.

Hibou: Hibou is a French Canadian. We sometimes call her 'Ebu' by mistake. She looks small and innocent, but Hibou grew up in the mean alleys of Montreal (after beeing declawed and abandoned by some horrible wretch). Marcus and Lawrence don't playfight with Hibou very much because she's crazy and she will mess you up. In fact, we all pretty much leave Hibou and her precious boxes alone.

When you get right down to it, a cat only has one thing in his or her wardrobe: a collar. Unless, of course, someone really likes dressing them up in sweaters and detective caps or whatever, in which case I don't judge. But back to the collar. For over a year after gaining sole custody of sweet Corelli, I inflicted the poor kitty with perhaps the only fashion faux pas a cat can be subject to. An ID tag in the shape of a bone. If Clinton and Stacey schooled cats in What Not To Wear, surely poor Corelli would have been up for some cash and a trip to New York.

I'm sorry, Corelli. I'm sorry for, like, 18 months of bone-jingling prowling and bowl-clanging eating.
